Different types of broadband connection
We like broadband. It’s fast and always on, which means we can go online whenever we want without having to dial up. But, did you know there are many different ways you can connect to the internet using a broadband service? Our broadband comparison service searches for packages that use either your phone line, a cable line or Local Loop Unbundling (LLU). When you compare deals on buy.co.uk, we search all the packages that are available to you.
ADSL
ADSL is the most common broadband connection method. It uses the same line as your phone, but doesn’t stop you from using your phone at the same time. Wi-Fi works in the same way, but you don’t need the cables to connect.
95% of UK phone exchanges can provide you with a broadband service. But if you live in a rural area you may not be able to connect.
To get ADSL, you need to activate your line and get a modem. This is normally organised by your broadband provider when you sign up to a package.
There are three types of modems:
- USB ADSL modem. This is a faster version of an ordinary modem, which some providers give you when you sign up.
- ADSL router. This lets you plug in more than one computer to the account.
- ADSL Wi-Fi router. Installing a Wi-Fi router will allow you to connect to the internet without using any cables. This means you can use the internet on your laptop, PDA or handheld games from anywhere in the house.
Cable
You can get your broadband service via cable, which could be cheaper if you also use digital TV. This is because you can usually get a bundled package for your digital TV, phone and broadband, paying just one monthly fee for all three services.
You pick up your broadband signal from either a set up box or a cable modem that your provider will send you. The major providers are HomeChoice, ntl and telewest.
3G mobile phone
This new technology allows you to access the internet from your laptop while on the move. The service is provided by the major mobile phone companies, via a card that you plug into your computer.
Coverage is not always perfect, but it’s getting better as the technology improves.
It costs about £100 for the card and then about £50 to £80 per month for access.
Satellite
Some small companies offer broadband via satellite. Most services work as a one-way link. This means the data is sent to your computer at high speed, but you cannot transmit back at the same speed. So, if you click on a link, for example, the request is sent using a normal dial-up or broadband connection.
You can pay for a two-way satellite link, but it’s pricy at about £1,000 to install and then £1,000 in rental.
